DNA testing
After input from state clubs, the National Labrador Retriever Breed Council has developed this position on DNA testing for Labrador Retrievers.
The following diseases and traits are those that are relevant to the current Australian Labrador Retriever gene pool and their DNA test results should be taken into consideration when making breeding decisions. Know your bloodlines and those of the partners you are considering when planning a mating.
DISEASES
- Progressive Rod Cone Dysplasia (PRA)
- Exercise Induced Collapse (Retriever Type)
- Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis (Dry Nose/Labrador Retriever Type)
- Centronuclear Myopathy (Labrador Retriever Type)
- Skeletal Dysplasia 2 (Mild Disproportionate Dwarfism)
- Macular Corneal Dystrophy (Labrador Type)
- Stargardt Disease (Retinal Degeneration)
TRAITS
- Brown Coat Colour Profile
- E Locus - (Cream/Red/Yellow)
- K Locus (Dominant Black)
- A Locus (Fawn/Sable;Tri/Tan Points)
- Long Hair Gene (Canine C95F)
- D (Dilute) Locus Note: This variation should not appear in a purebred Labrador Retriever. If it appears on your dog's DNA test results, please contact your state Labrador Retriever Club.
